Presidents Message

Hello and welcome to the new Treaty Six Hockey League.

The TSHL was started with a single phone call.  My good friend Dennis Moreau called me one day and we got to talking about the need for somewhere to play hockey.  I then took it upon myself to set up a meeting to see what kind of interest we could stir up.  That meeting was held on November 1, 2004 at the Leask Arena.

We started up with six teams and before we knew it we were at eight teams with a few more interested but not quite ready to commit.  Pretty soon the schedule was in place and we were finally an official league.  A league where we will try to bring back Indian Hockey to the full-fledged force that it once was.

I remember watching my father, Eric Pechawis, playing with the Mistawasis Warriors at the Mistawasis Arena to a packed house.  It was standing room only back in them days.  Watching players like Vern Johnstone, my uncle, as he would rip a slapshot through a brand new net and scare the life out of opposing goalies is a memory that I will always cherish.  Seeing Gordon (Mickey) Ledoux stretching out to make a big save late in the game and hearing the fans screaming for him is etched in my mind.  Or playing on a line in minor hockey with future NHLer Scott (Dooper) Daniels and the late, great Leon Tawpisim.

It’s memories like these that I want the next generation to have of their fathers, uncles and friends.  The TSHL is going to give them this chance.  We are making history here.  Let’s make it a history that we can be proud of.

So, at that, I would like to say thanks to Dennis Moreau, Kelly McClintock and all the team Governors who had a hand in forming this league.  If it wasn’t for them there would be no TSHL today and we would be still looking for a place to play.

Remember to play fair, play clean, respect officials and your opponents, and most importantly, remember to HAVE FUN.

Keep your heads up and your sticks on the ice.

Yours in Hockey,

Chris Pechawis

TSHL President
